At Our Lady of the Way, we offer evidenced based programs to assist students requiring additional support in Literacy and Numeracy. Specially qualified teachers design learning programs to cater for individual needs and work with students one to one or in small group settings.
We currently employ 7 Learning Support Officers who work with students in each of our classrooms, to target the needs of individual students. They complete daily reviews and testing to track student development and work with the classroom teacher to define and develop their Personal Learning Plans.
Our MacqLit Literacy Intervention Program caters for students in Years 3-6 who require additional support with reading. Our MiniLit Literacy Intervention Program (Meeting Initial Needs In Literacy) caters for students in Years 1 and 2 who require some early intervention when learning to read. The focus of both programs is on the big 5 of reading; phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Our specialised teachers target the individual needs in small groups or 1:1 sessions based on the needs of each student. This ranges from one to multiple sessions a week.
We offer Lunchtime Clubs to support the social and emotional needs of our students. They can choose from gardening, chess, library or art activities on different days, to escape the busy school yard.
Our onsite Counsellor is available to students on Mondays and Tuesdays, where our students are offered a safe space to feel supported for a range of individual needs. Our counsellor also does some whole class lessons at the beginning of the year and when the need arises.
